Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to examine the upskilling and reskilling strategies adopted by organizations to bridge these gaps and strengthen workforce capabilities; to analyze and compare upskilling and reskilling initiatives implemented in various countries; and to explore emerging trends and technological advancements influencing the future of workforce development and skill enhancement.

Design/methodology/approach: This study adopts a qualitative and descriptive research design supported by extensive secondary data from scholarly journals, industry reports, and policy documents. A comparative analysis approach was used to examine global corporate strategies on upskilling and reskilling initiatives. The study integrates emerging trends, technology adoption patterns, and workforce adaptability measures to develop a comprehensive framework for building a future-ready workforce.

Findings: The study reveals that corporate success in the digital era depends largely on strategic and continuous workforce development. Organizations that invest in structured upskilling and reskilling programs demonstrate higher adaptability, innovation, and sustainability. The integration of AI, digital tools, and human–AI collaboration is reshaping work dynamics, demanding proactive learning ecosystems and policies that bridge industry–academia skill gaps and foster lifelong learning cultures.

Research Implications: The research underscores the critical role of human capital investment in sustaining competitiveness amid technological disruptions. It offers a conceptual model linking corporate strategies, digital transformation, and workforce agility. The findings provide valuable insights for future empirical studies to measure the effectiveness of reskilling initiatives and to assess their impact on employee performance and organizational resilience.

Social Implications: The study highlights how workforce transformation contributes to social progress by enhancing employability, reducing job displacement, and promoting inclusive economic growth. Empowering employees with future-ready skills fosters greater job security, mental well-being, and equity in access to new opportunities. The findings emphasize the social responsibility of organizations in ensuring that digital transformation benefits both individuals and communities.

Originality / Value: This study presents an integrated, future-oriented framework that aligns corporate strategy with evolving technological and social realities. Unlike conventional works focusing solely on training outcomes, it combines sustainability, digital adaptability, and human–AI collaboration perspectives to define the ‘future-ready workforce.’ The originality lies in its holistic approach, bridging strategic management and workforce development within the context of global digital transformation.
